In particular, this role will support the Wiyi Yani U Thangani (Womens Voices) project and will involve supporting: Finalisation of the Stage One report which is informed by extensive consultations with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and girls across Australia throughout 2018; and Implementation of Stage Two of the project which involves dissemination of the reports findings, additional targeted consultations, and the development of educational products for stakeholders. The position holder will assist with the management of complex relationships across the Indigenous community, corporate, industry and government sectors; and work collegiately and in partnership with such stakeholders. The position holder will be proactive and responsive to highly complex problems, undertake quality research and deliver evidence-based material of a publishable standard. The position holder will work collegiately with other teams across the Commission, as well as other key projects such as the Close the Gap Campaign. DUTIES: Provide high quality advice to the Social Justice Commissioner, the Director, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice, and to the Commission more generally in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues. Contribute to the design and delivery of the Commissions project work, including that on the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and girls. This will include contributing to the development and implementation of, stakeholder meetings and roundtables, provision of technical advice, drafting of correspondence and reports. Develop and maintain a range of key stakeholder relationships, particularly within government and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations. Analyse complex issues and undertake quality research, as well as prepare written materials that are evidence based, succinct and persuasive. Prepare speeches and submissions in collaboration with other staff and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner. Work collegiately with senior management staff at the Commission. Other duties consistent with the above as directed. SELECTION CRITERIA: Demonstrated experience in working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities, including communicating in a culturally competent manner, and an understanding of the human rights issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in contemporary Australia. A demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively, including the requirement for proper negotiation and consultation, with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples on matters relevant to the delivery of the Government's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander development policies. High level conceptual, analytical, strategic thinking and problem-solving skills with an innovative and creative approach to resolving issues and positively contributing to reform. Demonstrated strong ability in research, analysis and strategy development, including legal and policy analysis. Demonstrated experience in writing a variety of documents to a publishable standard, in plain English. Demonstrated strong capacity to contribute to projects, often concurrently. A well-developed capacity to work collaboratively to ensure that various stakeholder interests are recognised and managed positively and professionally. Communication and presentation skills including a demonstrated ability to communicate at all levels of the organisation confidently, persuasively, sensitively and articulately on matters relevant to the delivery of identified priorities. The ability to travel domestically as required. A background in law is not essential but will be looked upon favourably, particularly with respect to knowledge around native title and Indigenous property rights.
