O rt \ PP`      Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays 30 Helen Street, Teneriffe QLD 4006 PO Box 1372, Eagle Farm BC Qld 4009 Email: pflagbris@bigpond.com Protect the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) Community from Discrimination As National Spokesperson for parents with LGBTI sons and daughters I am writing this submission to the Human Rights Commission on behalf of the parents of Australia to call on our federal government to nationalise the long needed anti discrimination legislation that will protect the LGBTI community, merely by granting them equal rights. We believe a national law prohibiting discrimination against LGBTI people needs to be legislated because state anti-discrimination laws vary and do not adequately protect this minority. Additionally, Federal Government needs to set a national standard and send out a positive message that discrimination against LGBTI people is unacceptable in any workplace. As parents we find it very difficult to know that our sons and daughters can be discriminated against in the work place just because of their sexual orientation. [A member described this story about her son:] He was a sergeant of police in the QPS until recently and is very reticent when starting a new job to disclose he is gay. He deliberately, never discloses or infers that he is gay when applying for a job fearing he may not be given the job because of the interviewers possible personal prejudices regarding homosexuality. As a result he feels the need to work exceptionally hard to show that he is equal to other work colleagues, with the belief this makes it very difficult for him to be overlooked for promotion. He fears he will be perceived as incapable of doing his work competently because hes gay. He also feels the need to overcome stereotypes before disclosing his sexual orientation. He is also concerned about being shunned, seen as a source of gossip or scorned if he discloses that hes gay too early. My son like many others is out and proud to friends, family and the community generally, but when it comes to the workplace he is very hesitant to disclose. He gets to know people first, builds trust and then if feeling safe (a) after a few months and (b) feels he has proven himself in the workplace then discloses he is gay. As one would expect, this is time consuming, stressful and debilitating psychologically and never a consideration for our heterosexual sons and daughters. Furthermore, it is not good for any individual or business because of lost time at work due to depression, or lack of confidence and initiative due to low self esteem. Additionally, as a parent it is heartbreaking to know that my son feels he is second rate and believes he has to work harder to prove he is worthy of acceptance just because of his sexual orientation. This is hardly fair. Australia has federal anti discrimination legislation protecting other groups and minorities. We need the same legislation to protect the gay community from discrimination in all workplaces. These are problems we as straights will never experience because it is assumed everyone is straight plus heterosexuality is considered the norm.
