There has been a huge increase in media coverage of minority groups since the report was published. September 11 and the Bali bombings have brought excessive publicity on Muslim influence, particularly the more militant sector of the Muslim community. 3. I believe there is adequate protection against discrimination but insufficient protection to discriminate in particular contexts. e.g vilification of a Christian Pastor in a Christian context for quoting the Quran which some Muslims found offensive. 2: Region and the State the Constitution, roles and responsibilities. We all have rights but these must not be promoted without the accompanying responsibilities. We all have responsibility to ensure that our actions (whether within our rights or not) do not impinge on anothers rights. Intimidation, for example, may be unintentional but traumatic to the intimidated. It is indeed a sad situation where any show of Aussie patriotism is suppressed because it might offend migrants. The Constitution 3. Our Constitution is based on Christian values and has stood the test of time. Migrants have chosen to come here, presumably for a better life style and probably in part due to our religious freedom. If this is the case, why should the Constitution be changed to help them replicate a former homeland? 5. A national Charter of Rights will not add to freedom. 3: Religion and the State practice and expression 2. Maintain current holidays. If other holy days are desired, these should be negotiated with individual employers. I personally find covered faces offensive. The idea of motorcyclists removing their helmets in banks was for reasons of identification. Surely the covering of ones face is not just a cultural issue. W R Harris P2 4: Security issues in the aftermath of September 11 2. If you break physical security, you forfeit your right to many of the freedoms, just the same as any criminal. Only the basic needs of food, safety, shelter and fair trial remain. 3. Faith based communities must conform with the law except in the case of employment of a person whose belief is in conflict with that of the employer. English is the national language and there is ample opportunity for all migrants to learn. In all cases where English is not understood, an independent interpreter must be used. Not understanding the law is no excuse. If you are in a country where you dont understand you behave very cautiously until you do understand! 5: The interface of religious, political and cultural aspirations 1.b This includes concentrations of particular cultural groups into certain streets or suburbs where behaviour can be offensive to residents, to a point where former residents feel they need to move out, or seek police protection. No one has the right to behave in an offensive manner. In my opinion tolerance has been stretched to the limit. Spitting may be tolerable in the gutter, but there is no place for spitting near another person or verbal abuse in public. 4. There should be respect for all people by all people and all should be treated equally. 5. There is no place for domination of one sex over another. The concept that a man is not responsible to curb his sexual desires (as implied by certain Muslim clerics) is abhorrent and demeaning to women. 6. There is ample opportunity for cultural preservation (of migrants culture) within Australian values. 8. There is definitely a role for religious voices in policy debates. The idea that new thinking is always best is greatly flawed. 6: Technology and its implications There is too much media coverage of minority groups and alternative beliefs. It is not politically correct to say I am offended by eg overt homosexual behaviour in public, or that we should forgive previous generations for the way our ancestors were treated. Even to suggest that Indigenous communities should be made alcohol free even though there is evidence that alcohol has a greater effect on their metabolism than on other races. Media has portrayed grossly biased views on religious practice. Often a Roman Catholic cathedral or a Pentecostal Megachurch is shown as typical Christianity, when there are many mainstream groups which would fit theologically between these two. Typically these (Catholic & Pentecostal) are shown at Christmas and Easter while a wide variety of other faiths or beliefs are shown at other times. 6. The high speed at which messages can be distributed by electronic means and the anonymity, even deception, which is possible is of great concern. W R Harris P3 7: Religion, cultural expression and human rights 3. There must be a better way that just pouring money into indigenous communities. Sure, they are disadvantaged but all people need to work for what they have. Too much time with too much cash does not make for a happy community. There are some success stories but they seem few and far between. We must think outside the square. In many cases the housing, water supply and motor vehicles provided have not been maintained or worse, destroyed. Aboriginal groups within the cities have had more opportunities than many white families. Let them work for their money! I actually feel we have racism in reverse when in comes to public money. Why else do we need a question on Social Security forms which ask if I am of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent? 4. Alcoholism and abuse. See also 3 above. Perhaps dry communities in isolated areas. 5. Our community is welcoming of all people, including those with disabilities. 7. Each faith community has its own view on sexual diversity. We welcome the person but our belief is that God intended marriage to be between one man and one woman. Any other expression of sexuality is outside Gods plan. 8. Religious organisations should be able to exclude people from employment if that person contravenes the organisations beliefs. 9. We have always cared for our environment as we believe we were appointed as custodians of the earth (or at least our part of it). 10. a I believe any group that vows to kill or destroy others, is a concern to Australia. b These groups should be subject to control and should certainly not receive assistance in any kind if non-compliant. jklnk l Q R j k m o p V g k ¶~~u~mmaXhA5OJQJhAhA5OJQJhAOJQJh)#5OJQJh)#h)#5OJQJh)#OJQJhJ3OJQJhnoOJQJhrOJQJhnohNz5OJQJhnohr5OJQJhno5OJQJh&5OJQJhjhrOJQJhjhjOJQJhr5OJQJhrhr5OJQJ!
