As a nation which was founded upon Christian principles arising from a Judeo- Christian ethics background, we are concerned that the national distictives which have enabled us to be such a tolernat and inclusive nation could be inadvertantly overtaken. Our concern is that there needs to continue to be provision for people to exercise their freedom of beliefs when they speak, write or communicate in any other media. This right needs to include freedom from religious vilification for simply expressing personal views. It also needs to include the right of Christian schools, churches and other organisations to choose their staff to reflect their values and beliefs. (A large multi-national company is hardly likely to employ staff who support the products and beliefs of a competitor. For example, can you see a BMW executive driving the latest Holden? How much more so is it important that freedom is kept paramount when choosing to select staff who are consistent with the values of their College and will express their religious or social beliefs.) We have great concern that various minority groupsmust not over-representatively influence the important process of seeing that we remain anoverall tolerant, inclusive society. Likewise we would see the importance of the legislative process continuing in the manner in which is was set up at Federation and as it has served us well, that Parliament continues to make our laws and Judges serve the nation to enforce the laws established by due process in the Legislative Chambers. The over 8000 people within ourchurch communitywith over 100 nationalities represented attending 10 different congregations and the Christian College with over 1100 students again from over 50 nations would be pleased to see the AHRC manage these matters carefully, justly and appropriately. We will be watching closely, anticipating a positive outcome.
