I have written an honours thesis on discrimination in employment on the ground of religion (in 1990) and I am a strong believer in Christ and practice the Christian faith. In my submission I just want to share in brief what I believe is in this country's best interests with respect to freedom of religion. It is all summed up in the following paragraph. Do nothing to hinder the free exercise of Christianity. Respect the most conservative ethical views of Christianity. Governments must stoppromoting things that come into conflict with these ethics - ethics which had been long held previously by our society and have helped us greatly. Tolerate the people who hold dangerous liberal views, but do not promotewhat they pushor holdit up as acceptable or virtuous or normal, as this will continue to have innumerable terrible social consequences. Jesus Christ's teachings were about loving everyone, including our enemies. There is therefore no danger to our society from those who genuinely follow his teachings, so they must not be hindered by legislation.Jesus also, along with the leaders of other religions, spoke against many behaviours that have harmful consequences for everyone, not just those who choose to practice them. Governments and other people genuinely concerned about society need to wise up and stop being 'Christian-phobic'. If they want to have less problems in society and less social costs to finance, such as poor physical and mental health and full prisons, they would do well toholdthe conservative ethical line and even to promote Christianity as a healthy and valid practice. It is far wiser to hold up, and to promote as preferable, high moral standards, rather than to hold up the lowest common denominator. Unfortunately most governments around the country are doing the latter, although the Howard government commendably did at least make an effort not to flirt with the conservative definition of the family amongst other things. Unfortunately the Rudd government and other governments around the country have already gone too far along a more socially experimental and dangerous andexpensive path in this area. The Rann government in my state should be commended for not legalising prostitution, just another of many examples of governments inexplicably and dangerously holding up harmful and immoralbehaviours as acceptable. Minorities, such as homosexuals, bi-sexualsand transvestites etc, willlive their livesrelatively free like everybody elsewithout any legislative supportfor their conduct. They should be able to live with their life choices just as everyone else lives with theirs. Governments do not need to support their behaviour. The sad result of what governments and other supporting groups are doing will be children who never knew their biologicalparent(s) and many confused children growing up to adopt a lifestyle that was never meant for them to practice. Theproportion of homosexuals/lesbians, bi-sexualsetcwill increase as a result of the radical line this current society is taking and we will see greater social problems than we even see now. Witchcraft is something else mentioned in the AHRC report. To promote such a dark thing by decriminalising it again would be just another example of a radical move that moves us away from wholesome conservative values that are far more beneficial to the majority of the population and which have held this society in good stead for many decades. In brief, this is what I and many other people I know see as being clearly in the best interests of this country. It should be self-evident. If it is not heeded then God help this country and the people in it. The risks of radical and rampantsecularism must be weighed in the balances too.
