Taxis have to be booked in advance if you have some kind of emergency or if the need to travel comes up unexpectedly, you can ring for a taxi, but there is no guarantee as to how long you will have to wait or even if it will turn up. The limousine taxis have space for 2 chairs, but the manoeuvring is very difficult. If your driving skills (of your wheelchair) are not very good, you wouldnt be able to get another person in and electric wheelchairs are so heavy that the driver cannot help, by lifting or pushing the chair. If 2 passengers are in Electric Wheelchairs, they would need separate taxis, therefore if I were out with one of my friends from school we would not be able to split a taxi fare because wed each need a separate taxi. Because the public and private buses in Newcastle and Lower Hunter Regions do not cater for people with physical disabilities transport and accessibility is made harder because taxis are our only form of Public Transport. Some taxi drivers are very slow loading and can take up to 5 minutes to load a person in a wheelchair. They often have the meter running whilst they are loading. We have to bear this extra cost. Local taxi firms admit there are problems getting taxis, they say there are enough taxi but they have problems getting drivers. It appears that Saturday is the worst day for getting a taxi.
