To develop a contingency plan to service people with disabilities at all our centres. To maintain and increase accessibility to the legal standard in the future. Background The NMRC was established in 1984 as a not for profit organisation to service the needs of newly arrived people from multicultural backgrounds. NMRC has in place 12 funding arrangements with a range of Federal, State, local governments and our head office of NMRC is located at 251 High Street Preston Victoria. NMRC is an incorporated association managed by an elected Board of Management from its members. The day to day operations of NMRC is the responsibility of the Chief Executive Officer and in total the centre directly employs 125 bi lingual people. NMRC Vision To promote the well-being and successful settlement of people from Multicultural backgrounds living in the northern region of Melbourne. NMRC Mission To provide an integrated range of innovative and responsive services that: Are informed and shaped by those who use them Adopt a whole of life approach to settlement Are developed collaboratively with agencies and local government NMRC Services NMRC has four core service delivery units: Settlement Services Employment Services Aged Care Services Corporate Services NMRC is a quality assured organisation and service delivery to the highest standard is our guarantee. Settlement Services NMRC provides direct service, information and answers about the broad sweep of settlement related issues that face a newly arrived person. We assist with: Finding a place to live Advice and assistance with Centrelink benefits Enrolment at English language centres Advice, information and direct assistance with immigration matters Providing direct financial assistance through a no interest loans program Employment Services NMRC provides employment services under the trading name of Spectrum Employment Services. Job Network Program A federal government initiative to assist unemployed people find work. We have four office locations Preston, Epping, Fitzroy and Greensborough. Community Jobs Program-Employment Initiative A state funded program to assist unemployed people with up skilling, education and finding work. We have two office location Preston and Epping Personal Support Programme A federal initiative which aims to assist people who have major personal problems that affect their capacity to gain and retain employment. This service is provided from Preston, Heidelberg, Broadmeadows, St Albans and Newport. Aged Care Services NMRC provides a number of specially targeted services directly to older people from Multicultural communities. Each week over 500 people receive some form of service from Aged Care Services. These services include: Multicultural (in home) Respite Service . The service provides support for carers of aged or disabled people Social Support Ten social support groups meet each week bringing together over 300 older people to focus on recreational and social activities. Adult Day Care NMRC provides four ethno specific day care programs per week where frail people enjoy a range of activities and a lunchtime meal. Ethnic Meals Program NMRC provides authentic, nutritional home delivered ethnic meals to a range of older people. Corporate Services Corporate services are crucial to the smooth day to day operation of NMRC. It provides: Financial management Payroll functions Reception Information technology support Accounts Building and vehicle maintenance General administration Goal It is the intention of this Action Plan to have in place strategies to service people with disabilities as soon as possible and to be totally compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act as soon as possible. NMRC will ensure that all staff members receive the appropriate training and professional development to acquire the knowledge to service the needs of people with disabilities more effectively. NMRC Premises Objective: NMRC premises will comply with the DDA with regards to physical access and toilet facilities. Actions: To achieve the objective NMRC will conduct regular reviews of access requirements of each office to ensure compliance. The review will be the responsibility of NMRC Occupational Health & Safety representative. Greensborough Office Currently the NMRC office in Greensborough does not allow for wheel chair access and individuals with mobility constraints would likely have difficulties to climb the stairs. The office does not have a disabled toilet facility. NMRC will: Consult with the building owners regarding the feasibility of installing a suitable ramp. Consultant with the building owner regarding the feasibility of alterations to the internal toilet Actions already undertaken To cater for the needs of people with disabilities NMRC has a formal agreement with Community Information Diamond Valley to use their facilities to service clients.
