I am an air lift pilot and have recently transferred from the full time air force to the active reserves. My reason was so that I can have a more stable family life and stay at home with children while my wife works in her own business. I may not have left the full time air force if flexible work practices (or even the possibility of taking long service leave) was available. I am performing reserve work in a flying capacity for an Air Lift Sqn and am in a minority in several ways. My experience is one often experienced by female aircrew who have children and therefore cannot fly whilst pregnant. It can be very difficult to return to a flying role, especially in an air lift sqn because of the reactive and flexible nature of the role. I have managed to retain my flying currency because I transitioned with no large period where I have been unable to fly, this is different from a female member who can't fly whilst pregnant. I believe that there needs to be a cultural mindset shift in the way that flexible work practices are employed to make use of the qualification and experience that both male and female possess in an Air Lift environment. I have only been in this position for a couple of months, however I think that more could be done to retain qualified people (male or female) who wish to continue employment in a dynamic environment using flexible work practices. Things such as flexible use of childcare rebates for employment of a nanny (as alluded to by the opposition leader) with additional allowance for this purpose from defence. The biggest issue I have is the need to go away at short notice and the stress this puts on my wife who is busy running her own business. If there was a way to provide domestic support to the spouse who stayed home then I believe you would find more parents willing to continue to work. I am willing to discuss these ideas more if required as I gain more experience in a flexible work environment.
