Many purely associated to gender. Work place flexibility - recently there has been a new personnel policy development which includes mixed messing. Which in its basic form means forcing females to go to sea on a submarine and sleep in quarters shared by males. Minimal thought has been developed in accordance with this policy. This policy actually promotes a lack of flexible work arrangements that specifically does not meet the needs of women. In particular there is no suitable arrangement for females to appropriately dress. Nor has there been made any allowance for females whom do not feel comfortable or whom do not wish to share their accomodation space, a space in which bunks are seperated by approximately 1 metre in all directions, with males. Although males are given a choice as to whether they indeed wish to share accommodation with females. In fact on this particular platform, shared accommodation facilities were enforced in the following manner: a mess meeting was held to decide bunk allocations, and the mess president announced "who wants to share with the girls" those personnel were chosen without any consideration given by the females as to whom they felt comfortable with. On complaint by multiple female sailors, the chain of command specifically did nothing, and openly announced that they were happy with the outcome. Furthermore, females who are uncomfortable with the process are landed, given psychological screening to assess whether their employment within defence is suitable. This does not align with the view that defence is willing to do whatever it can to support females. In addition to this most oppressed version of workplace flexibility, female numbers onboard submarines has shrunken from 6 to as little as 2 or 3 that I personally witnessed. Bringing females to a dangerous minority amongst a crew of 60, in which the negative attitudes prevalent against women and common at present can flourish with numbers. Whilst onboard woman were openly critised on a far more regular basis then men and sexist jokes were an everyday occurance. Members who stood up in defence, in particular women, were victimised even further. Career Management - I found in my personal experience that men have a common behaviour and attitude in which they become closer mates with people of the same gender i.e other men. In making these relationships they then bias against women in relation to career management. I have witnessed many times during my career preferential treatment towards males by other males due to friendship and mateship, and regularly have been offered preferential career opportunities also eg promotion, courses, work experience opportunities.
