I have to say it was more focussed on higher ranks. After discussions from females currently serving who do have kids and at the NCO level the main issue would be financial. Day care equates to $800 or $900 per fornight which almost makes up 2/3 of a JNCO wage going to day care. I believe there should be a day care centre of facility on barracks at a lower rate. This would benefit single parents and most likely retain serving members with kids, as they are closer to work and don't have to worry about driving to far to pick there kids up and can even visit them on there lunch break. Also a good point brought up was members who do stay in barracks environment who are in roles with units that deploy or go field alot. A single member normally discharges once they had enough of going out field and being away from home. I've spoken to a few singley females who have gotten out for this reason. That they are never in barracks, never at home. I understand scenarios where members who do stay on barracks are usually medically restricted but to send the same people out for a training activity (field) over and over again does put a strain on members and there families this includes males and females currently serving. There were a few points I didn't agree with and I would of opened a whole can of worms if I said this but when we join up we made a choice, we knew what life this was and yes it is hard to sustain a normal family life. But we all make a choice male or female to choose family or career. Not saying members should get out when they get pregnant. They are still invaluable to defence but our priorities will change our obligation will be for family. If members do want to have a family and be promoted they should have a partner or another career to be supportive, there will times when they are away from the family to do either a course to be qualified for promotion or be deployed. In any relationship there is always a give and a take one person career will always take precidence over another. Also there not one unit that I know of that hasn't bee flexible with members to either take careers leave or go home early for one reason or another. I would like to know what other organisation would allow there employees to go home for family reasons and still be paid normal wages. It doesn't matter if there supervisor agreeable usually cause of the workload that left behind but they will always agree that family matters come first, if a member isn't given that flexibility for family no one would stay.
