These families leave all that is familiar behind and then get locked up as if they are criminals. The detrimental affects this has on an individual and family's mental health is dangerous and cruel. There are too many parallels with the Nazi's regiment camps...We should learn from our history and take a stand to not make the same mistakes. Everyone has the right to air, water, food, shelter and happiness. There are studies (Stanford study, 1970's) that show the awful affects of power. The people who are imprisoned/kept captive become weak and their mental health and suicidal ideation are two very serious consequences of that. Those in power (the guards, etc.) undergo "power trips", feel entitlement over the weak, and a hostile, dangerous, and deprived environment begins to grow. There are too many millions of people that just want to be safe and live their life simply, they can not be treated like heathens and criminals. I encourage you, the leaders at the top, to put yourself in their shoes...picture yourself, your family, your child, in a detention centre in PNG. You do not know the language and you do not have any "rights". you just sit, and you wait. for days, months and YEARS! It's man's inhumanity to man and it needs to stop. Yes, the length of time can have detrimental affects on the child's mental health. The longer they remain in detention, whether it be in a detention centre or community detention, 鱨վ/adolescents run the risk of developing PTSD, anxiety/depression, suicidal ideation. Symptoms are loss of hope, anger, self harm, mutism, nightmares, phobias, the list goes on and on. If they are not permitted to work or go to school (once turned 18) they can turn to illegal drugs/substances (to sell or to use in order to make money or mask their feelings), street crime, homelessness, and suicide along with the mental health diagnoses above and others which have not been listed- A father, mother, and daughter arrived in Brisbane Australia 5 days after the no-advantage policy. The father became so fearful of their future; IE not being able to make money for his family, not being allowed to learn the language. Not having the chance at anything to provide for his family, that he committed suicide. The 15 year old daughter found her father dead, and they had an incredibly close relationship. Now, 8 months later, her mothers is in hospital for attempted suicide. For the same reason as her husband, and because she is unable to cope with the extreme amount of grief and loss. Once an adolescent reaches the age of 18, they can no longer go to school. There are limited resources to access 'free' english classes. They are also unable to work. Therefore they are rendered education-less and job-less. They have no other options but to sit and wait for their visas to be accepted or rejected... School is a safe place for children and adolescents. At our school there are music programs, art therapy, excursions, 8 levels of ILC/ESL. 鱨վ and adolescents integrate with people from their own and other cultures, learn about other people's stories, get to share their stories which helps with grief/loss and development of PTSD. They interact with people from Australia, receive tutoring help, get involved with the school community and sports, and are able to dream about the future, develop hope, and deal with their troubles and worries with professionals/staff who can provide support The effects of family separation on children is extreme. I see students in art therapy and very few have their parents here in Australia. They've either been left behind in the home country and hope to make their way, or are now separated in PNG or other countries (UK etc). One young mans family sent him over to Australia. Upon his arrival, he sent for them. all 13 members of his family died in the boat on it's way over to Australia. If the Aus. goverment was so concerned with the boats; they could simply donate and help to replace them. It's obviously more than that...and the prejudice needs to stop. Families that are separated, the parents from children, as I described can have an extreme effect. The children are unable to focus in class, they are unable to sleep and have nightmares. The children often worry and can not function; their have limited attention spans, develop depression, have sleep deprivation, develop behavioural issues, can be the root cause and/or add to the child's trauma, and unfortunately again can lead to suicide. There is limited care and welfare services because they are all being shut down! many wonderful facilities that provide counselling, excursions, driving lessons and further support for children/teens are being shut down by the day. The supports were adequate but can not survive. There need to be more trained personelle in this field - people who can provide care and support who have competencies about cultural differences. People who know how to place a foreign country properly on the global map. Community detention has it's pros and cons, but it comes down to the carer. Some are verbally and physically abusive to the children while others are thankfully appropriate and kind. There needs to be a background check, and random check-in / observation period for the carer's to ensure they are doing their job correctly. The Minister for IBP isn't enough. there are too many hundreds and thousands of unaccompanied children, how can the minister possibly keep track and aid to them all? There needs to be a representative in each city/suburb where refugee's and asylum seeker's are to attend to their cases and individual needs for faster turn around and appropriate time frames so these people can actually get some answers! There have not been alternatives made to detention; only that they are now not even allowed to enter into Australia - disgraceful. The living conditions have worsened since moving them to PNG and MI. The changes have been families being torn apart and individuals not having a say in where they are going to be detained and then, if let out, live. The changes to laws are atrocious. Once someone is above 18 (including parents) they are no longer allowed to learn English, go to school, or work.
