Advise on and contribute to the conduct of research, policy development and planning activities on designated subject matter areas, including: discussion papers, speeches and submissions, the production of the annual Social Justice Report and Native Title Report and oversight of consultancies and specific projects. Develop, maintain and nurture networks and liaise with identified internal and external stakeholders across a range of constituencies, communities, government agencies and organisations. Work collegiately with internal stakeholders across the Commission to achieve the strategic goals of the Commission, and in the development and delivery of key Commission priorities. Where relevant, supervise staff and interns in the conduct of research, preparation of materials and undertaking projects. Attend consultative and other meetings, conferences and seminars and represent the Commission as required; including before parliamentary committees and other public inquiries and participate in the public awareness/education and promotional work of the Commission. JOB DESCRIPTION The Adviser is responsible for the provision of advice to the Social Justice Commissioner/President on a range of human rights issues both in a domestic and international context. The Adviser will also work collaboratively with the Director - Policy and Programs and team managers, as well as with other Commission teams and advisers in the development and delivery of key Commission priorities. SELECTION CRITERIA A demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies and cultures and an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders in contemporary Australian society and the diversity of circumstances of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. A demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively, including the requirement for proper negotiation and consultation, with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples on matters relevant to the delivery of the Government's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander development policies. A demonstrated specialist knowledge and understanding of a broad range of human rights issues and confidence in delivering information succinctly and cogently. Well developed communication skills including a demonstrated ability to communicate confidently, persuasively, sensitively and articulately, on matters relevant to the delivery of the Commissions identified strategic priorities both in person and in writing. Ability to supervise staff and resources effectively (where required), contribute to Commission wide activities and respond flexibly to changing work demands.
