These comments were prepared in 1996 by HREOC staff acting as secretariat to the subcommittee of the National Committee on Discrimination in Employment and Occupation considering development of disability standards on employment under the DDA. This document summarises submissions received on the first draft of standards and provides commentary on those submissions.

The discussion paper was commissioned by my predecessor, Dr Blewett, as part of the Federal Government's disability reform agenda. Prepared by Ms Chris Ronalds, with assistance from the Labour Research Centre, the paper addresses the following issues:

In July 1999 the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission received a representative complaint under the Disability Discrimination Act ("DDA") lodged on behalf of people who use wheelchairs regarding current lack of accessibility of Summer Hill railway station, and seeking implementation of accessibility at that station this financial year.
