Thank you for the introduction and I thank HREOC for the opportunity to speak here today. Before I commence my discussion, I would also like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the country on which we meet, and pay my respects to their elders, both past and present.

Conspicuously active in retirement! Perhaps most notably his Grotius Lecture in London last month in which he raised serious doubts as to the legality under international law of Britain鈥檚 invasion of Iraq. This is hardly the path of a man seeking a quiet retirement.

Giridharan Sivaraman's anti-discrimination legal and advocacy work is based on his strong passion for human rights, as well as his moral conviction to speak truth to power and fight for the rights of the marginalised, oppressed, and vilified. The UNESCO Chair, Cultural Diversity and Social Justice is committed to conducting high impact research aligned with UNESCO's core objectives, as well as fostering effective dialogue that acknowledges and respects the value and integrity of all peoples and cultures.
